Students in Ms. Terveen’s first grade class are in the midst of a meaningful, hands-on, student-centered learning experience that beautifully blends academics with giving back. As part of their current reading unit, Grow Plants, Grow, students are exploring what plants need to live and thrive, learning about life cycles, seasonal changes, and developing curiosity through observation and care.
Bringing this learning to life, students are planting and growing their very own plants right in the classroom. But the experience does not stop there. In an exciting first for FJC, the class will host its own booth at Rocky Point Day on Saturday, May 16th, where they will sell the plants they have grown.
Even more meaningful is the purpose behind their work. All proceeds from the plant sale will be donated to support a special cause in memory of Stephanie-Lynn, a former FJC student who passed away from childhood cancer. The funds will go toward a yearly book drive that provides new books to children in hospitals, helping bring comfort and joy to those who need it most.
Throughout this process, students are not only deepening their understanding of science and literacy, but also building important life skills. They are working together to create flyers and signage, practicing communication with customers, learning how to handle money, and understanding the importance of helping others.
This project is a powerful example of student-centered learning at its best, where academic concepts are connected to real-world application and a greater purpose. We are incredibly proud of our first graders for the care, effort, and heart they are putting into this special initiative.
