Dear FJC Families,

As another school year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for the privilege of spending each day with your incredible children. Thank you for entrusting us with their learning, their growth, and their hearts. It is a responsibility we cherish, and one we never take for granted.

Throughout this year, we’ve had the honor of watching your children grow in so many meaningful ways. We’ve seen the frustrations that come with challenge, the joy that accompanies discovery, and the remarkable kindness that defines our school community. These shared experiences have shaped not just our students, but all of us lucky enough to walk beside them.

As we stand on the hill for our final wave goodbye (perhaps FJC’s most bittersweet tradition) we are reminded just how special this community is. Success in schools takes a team, and our team of teachers, staff, families, and students is truly second to none. Together, we’ve created a place where children feel safe, supported, and celebrated.

We hope you and your family have a joyful and restful summer filled with fun, laughter, and time together.

To our second graders: we are so proud of you. We can’t wait to hear about all the amazing things you’ll do at JAE and beyond.

To our returning students: we’ll be waiting with big smiles in September, ready to begin another wonderful year.

And to our incoming kindergartners: welcome! We can’t wait to begin this exciting journey with you.

From all of us at FJC: thank you, have a fantastic summer, and we’ll see you soon!

Gratefully yours,

Mr. Westerlund & Ms. Pletka

Diving into Art: FJC Students Help Celebrate the Long Island Aquarium’s 25th Anniversary

Mrs. Zimmer and Mrs. Fisher’s second grade class recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in a very special art project in partnership with the Long Island Aquarium—all thanks to Alice Parody’s mom!

In celebration of the aquarium’s 25th anniversary, local students were invited to create aquatic-themed artwork to be showcased at the event. Embracing this creative challenge, the class decorated vibrant sea creatures and coral pieces, contributing to a beautiful, collaborative coral reef display. Their artwork is now proudly on exhibit at the Long Island Aquarium for visitors to enjoy!

To top it all off, the experience culminated in an interactive live virtual tour of the aquarium, giving students an up-close look at marine life and the world their artwork helped celebrate.

This unique blend of art, science, and community collaboration made for an exciting and memorable experience. A big thank you to Alice’s mom and the Long Island Aquarium for bringing this opportunity to our students!

Chalk Day... Indoors! Creativity Shines Despite the Heat

Even when a heat wave keeps us indoors, our amazing teachers at FJC always find a way to make learning fun! When high temperatures made it unsafe to head outside, Ms. Sumwalt’s first grade class and others didn't let the weather stop them from celebrating Chalk Day in style.

Instead of heading to the blacktop, our creative and resourceful teachers rolled out black paper along the hallway floors—transforming it into an indoor chalk canvas! Students had a blast letting their imaginations run wild, filling the space with colorful drawings, cheerful messages, and plenty of smiles.

It was a joyful reminder that with a little flexibility and a lot of heart, every day can be a memorable one. A big thank you to Ms. Sumwalt, the first grade staff, and all of our innovative teachers who turn challenges into opportunities and keep the fun going—no matter the weather!

Mahalo, PTA! A Luau to Remember for Our Second Graders

On Friday, June 20th, our second graders celebrated an important milestone, their transition to Joseph A. Edgar School, with an unforgettable end-of-year Luau, thanks to the incredible efforts of our PTA.

The cafeteria and backyard were transformed into a tropical island oasis, setting the stage for a joyful evening filled with laughter, music, and memories. Students and families enjoyed a delicious dinner provided by Zona Out East Diner and sweet treats from McNulty’s Homemade Ice Cream Parlor. As guests arrived, they were welcomed by the gentle sounds of ukulele music performed by our own talented music teacher, Ms. Macedonio, adding the perfect island touch.

Out back, the celebration continued with a lively DJ, games, dancing, and a whole lot of fun. The playgrounds were buzzing with energy, and the smiles on our students’ faces said it all.

We are so grateful to our PTA for planning such a thoughtful and festive event. Their dedication helps ensure that our students have not just a great education, but a truly memorable experience here at FJC.

Thank you for sending our second graders off in style!
