Students Bring Stories to Life with Stop-Motion Animation!

In recent weeks, our first and second graders have been hard at work in the STEAM Lab, diving into the fascinating world of stop-motion animation—with a special focus on the magic of sound effects. This engaging unit has allowed students to discover how sound can bring animated stories to life, adding depth, emotion, excitement, and lots of laughter to every scene.

Working collaboratively, each class is creating its own stop-motion video. Students are learning how to brainstorm ideas, write scripts, and design characters and backgrounds, all while experimenting with creative ways to produce sound effects. Using everyday objects, they’re finding out just how fun and imaginative sound design can be!

This incredible hands-on experience has been made possible by the 2024–2025 New York State Educational Media Technology Association (EMTA) Media Literacy Grant, which provided funding for iPads to support student learning. With these new tools in hand, our young creators are combining storytelling, technology, and media literacy in truly inspiring ways.

We are so proud of our future filmmakers and deeply grateful to Ms. Sicurella and Ms. Stueber for their leadership and commitment to innovative learning. Stay tuned for a special showcase of these fantastic stop-motion creations—you won’t want to miss them!

Second Graders Experience the Magic of Metamorphosis

Students in Ms. Zimmer and Ms. Fisher’s second grade class recently had a front-row seat to one of nature’s most amazing transformations—the life cycle of a butterfly!

Thanks to the generous donation from the Castano family, the class received a special butterfly kit containing eight caterpillars. Over the course of several weeks, students observed with excitement and curiosity as the caterpillars grew, formed chrysalises, and eventually emerged as beautiful butterflies.

This afternoon, the class gathered outside to take part in the most memorable moment of all—releasing all eight butterflies back into nature. It was a joyful and meaningful experience that brought their learning to life in a truly unforgettable way.

We’re so grateful to the Castano family and Ms. Zimmer and Ms. Fisher for making this hands-on science lesson possible. It was a powerful reminder of the wonders of nature and a perfect example of learning beyond the classroom walls.
